Can You Mix Vegetable Oil and Olive Oil for Frying?
Combining vegetable oil and olive oil for frying foods is not generally recommended. Olive oil by itself is an excellent oil for frying, however, vegetable oil is much more suited for high-heat applications such as deep frying.
Why Not to Mix Vegetable Oil and Olive Oil
- Olive oil has a lower smoke point than vegetable oil – Smoking indicates that the oil has reached a high enough temperature to be transformed into toxins and free radicals. Olive oil has a smoke point of 390°F (199°C), meaning it can begin smoking before the optimal temperature for frying, which is 365°F (185°C).
- Mixing can reduce the vitamin E content – Olive oil has an excellent vitamin E content, but if it is mixed with vegetable oil, the total vitamin E content decreases, as does the flavor and shelf life. Vitamin E has a positive effect on health when consumed as part of a balanced diet.
- The taste of the food can be altered – Olive oil has a strong flavor, while vegetable oil is relatively neutral. If the two are combined, the flavor of the olive oil may end up overpowering. This could alter the taste of the food and not everyone may enjoy the results.
Mixing vegetable oil and olive oil is not recommended for frying foods as it can have a negative effect on the flavor and nutrition of the food. Olive oil is best used for lower heat applications such as baking or sautéing. Vegetable oil is better suited for higher heat applications such as deep frying.
