How to Sharpen a Vegetable Peeler

Every kitchen should be equipped with a sharp vegetable peeler, but if yours has gone dull over time, here is how to sharpen it. It’s an easy process that’ll restore the blade to its original crispness.

What You Need

  • Vegetable peeler
  • Fine grit sandpaper
  • Towel

Step 1: Examine the Peeler Blade

Take a minute to inspect the blade of the vegetable peeler. Check for any nicks or small breaks in the edge and inspect the overall sharpness.

Step 2: Sand the Blade

Once the blade is ready for sharpening, take a piece of fine grit sandpaper and place it on a flat surface with the grit side facing up. Carefully rub the blade against the sandpaper. Start at the end of the blade near the handle and smoothly drag it towards the tip in a long, consistent stroke. As you sand, turn the blade slightly so the whole edge is sharpened. Repeat this step several times until the blade is sharpened, then use a towel to wipe away any metal filings.

Step 3: Test the Peeler

Once your blade is sharp, test it out on a vegetable. If the peeler is still not cutting through the skin easily, repeat Step 2, sanding for longer or with a finer grit.

A sharp vegetable peeler should speed up all types of kitchen tasks. With a few minutes of sharpening, you’ll be able to peel vegetables much faster and easier.
