Ginger – A Fruit or a Vegetable?
Ginger is a versatile root vegetable commonly used in African, Indian and traditional Chinese cuisines. Regarded for its healing properties, ginger is used in several health and beauty remedies. However, is ginger a fruit or a vegetable?
Fruit or Vegetable?
Ginger belongs to the plant genus Zingiber, which is the same family as marjoram, cardamom and galangal. It is a rhizome root which grows underground, similar to turmeric and garlic. The root is covered in tight skin, which can range in colour from yellow to a deep red and is also covered with protective nodes.
To clear the confusion, botanically ginger is a vegetable. But it is unusual because it doesn’t have the parts that are necessary components of vegetables, like a stem, seeds, leaves, flowers and so on.
Ginger is loaded with many vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, vitamin A, vitamin B, K, C and other trace minerals. It is also rich in dietary fiber and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Ginger’s unique flavor makes it an essential ingredient in many culinary dishes. It is also an important component in many remedies for various health conditions. Although ginger is botanically a vegetable, it doesn’t have the parts that are necessary components of vegetables. Thus, ginger cannot be entirely classified as a fruit or a vegetable.
